Since I have a little catching up to do . . . I thought I'd start with what I WOULD HAVE blogged about had I actually taken the time!

Let's start with June 25th . . . ha ha ha! I'm such a loser - but here ya go.

On June 25th - in the midst of Sports Camp - Kent and Shelly came to pay us a little visit from good ole WA! Kent was only in town for a couple of days, so we enjoyed meeting up for brunch at one of my favorite little restaurants - The Sundance Grille.

We had a lot of fun catching up - and, of course - being crazy!

I'm Not Dead . . . Yet!

I've been on a bit of a blog-cation so to speak - and I've been thoroughly enjoying it! After the craziness of Sports Camp, and dealing with a little girl with a broken arm in the prime of the summer, I was a bit exhausted.

Since then much has happened. So, I'll be taking the next few days to recap our summer fun!

Plumb Tuckered Out!

I took Faith with me to work today! She's really done very well today considering that she just broke her arm less than 24 hours ago. Suddenly, it was very quiet in the other room . . . and this is what I found:



Sweet girl! She was up until almost midnight last night, and was awake after a fitful night of sleep at 8:30a. The arm that is broken holds the very thumb she still sucks for comfort. And since the cast is so straight due to the nature of her break, she can't get her precious thumb to her mouth. She's plumb tuckered out - and I can't say that I blame her!

Rest well, little one! I love you!

Zoo Adventures!

A week or so ago, we went to the zoo with friends. The kids had a BLAST! It just goes to show that the simple things are the best things! Animals AND friends - what could be better?

Kindergarten Graduation!

Last week Friday, Faith had her Kindergarten Program. She had to dress as Honey Horse, one of their alphabet characters. The two Kindergarten classes combined to show us all that they had learned throughout the year: counting by 2's, letter sounds and their favorite words, Bible verses, beautiful songs etc. It was wonderful!

Faith was very nervous about getting up in front of a huge audience all by herself (to say her Honey Horse line), but she did wonderfully! It was so great to see her face beaming as she sang songs to the Lord, and to see the pride in her face after she said her lines.

I am so proud of Faith for her many accomplishments this year! She has grown so very much - both in height and in character. I am also very thankful for DCS and the Christian perspective she gets on everything she learns! God is Good!

Grey's = Two Thumbs Down!

Ok, I know my posts have been a little sparse lately . . . which is what is leading to the randomness of the current posts. There's been lots going on, and now I have the time to post, so here ya go:

My Rant:
This picture reminds me of better Grey's days . . . you know when Dr. Burk and the Mrs. Dr. Shepherd were on the show . . . before the weird story lines and gay kissing.

I realize that Grey's has never been a show that represents high moral standards. However, it WAS very well written, witty, funny, there was a good balance between the focus put on the relationships on the show, and the patients coming into Seattle Grace . . . but since the writer's strike - and, let's admit, this whole season has gone a little sketchy. The last three shows have shown gay kisses. A dying army dude and his lover, the two women doctors that are taunting McSteamy, and then the two women doctors again.

Come On!

I realize that the show was full of sexual permiscuousness and infidelity before . . . but, for me, the latest turn in the writing has turned me off of Grey's. ER did the same thing several years ago . . . it just wrecked a good show.

Any thoughts?

13 Blissful Years!

Young and in L-O-V-E! I was 16 - he was 17!

On May 26th, Mike and I had the privilege of celebrating 13 years of marriage. That's 17 years total of being together! Hokey Petes are we getting old. You know you're getting old when you've been with your spouse longer than you were without them!

I was 16 when I fell in love with Mike. I knew within a month of dating him that he was THE ONE! If any 16 year-old would tell me that today, I would think they were crazy . . . but I knew! We had been good friends for about a year . . . and that friendship slowly grew into the real thing.

My junior year was a tough one. My dad had left just the year before, and as a result, I was all mixed up trying to deal with all the stuff a teenager deals with, along with trying to figure out life with separated parents. Mike was a good friend who truly cared about me - and most importantly, he could make me laugh during a time in my life when laughter didn't come easy. We were band nerds and Madrigals partners - we even had study hall together (which is where the Punk and Nerd Day pics were taken).

We started dating just after Mike graduated from SCHS. A year later we were both in the same dorm at Calvin. And, it's all history from there. We were married between my junior and senior years of college.

If only we could have known how clueless we were!
Mr. and Mrs. and all of 20 and 21? Yikes!

Just look at what babies we were! We had no idea what our vows would come to mean - how they would be tested and tried. "I promise to be your faithful and loving wife; in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, and in joy as well as in sorrow . . ."

Divorce . . . Miscarriage . . . Building a house . . . Infertility . . . Cancer . . . More Infertility and Miscarriage . . . Miracle Babies . . . Mystery Illness . . . Depression

Sheesh! It's a miracle we made it this far still standing! And not just standing, but still 100% in love with each other!

I read somewhere that "it's in the crap that flowers bloom best." We've been through an awful lot over the last 13 years of marriage, but our marriage and our love just gets more and more beautiful and strong each year.

Michael, I love you more today than I did yesterday - and I'll love you more tomorrow than I do today! You are the love of my life; my confidant, my comfort, my security, my best friend. Thank you for loving me the way you do! I am a better person because of you!

I'm No Katie DeBoer or Tina Vink. . . But . . .

For the last year and a half I've been dreaming of a new camera . . . I've been having terrible, horrible, no good, very bad thoughts about our point and shoot camera - its the POS model (if you know what I mean).

Anyway, thanks to Uncle Sam and our incentive check, I am now the new owner of a Canon Rebel xTi. It's the most beautiful, wonderful thing to take a picture without having to wait for the flash to "warm up". It's an even beautifuler thing (yes I realize this is bad grammar) to NOT HAVE to use the flash because I can adjust the apeture and ISO . . . wow! Another wonderful thing is the zoom . . . it came with two lenses - one of which will allow me to zoom in from very far away. But, best of all, the memory card can hold 1200 10mpx pictures . . . instead of my 22 5mpx pictures that my point and shoot allowed! I can snap until my little heart is content . . . and delete what I don't want.

Mike is calling this my Mother's Day, Birthday, Christmas for the next two years gift . . . but it's worth it!

I may never be a Katie DeBoer or Tina Vink . . . but I'm well on my way to better pictures of my kids!

For some reason, I'm unable to put any text with my slide show . . . so here's my addendum!

Tuesday was a BIG DAY in Faith's life - she FINALLY learned how to ride a two-wheel bike! Bella, too, is very proud that she has graduated to a "big girl bike" with training wheels! She's getting the peddling thing down . . . now we have to focus on the steering part!

I was very glad to have my new sweet camera to capture this Kodak Moment! I was snapping away, taking picture after picture of Faith and Mike, and didn't even realize that Bella was in the pictures riding toward them. Notice in the slide show that as Bella gets closer to Mike and Faith, she veers off to the right and crashes into a tree! Ha Ha! It was awesome to have it captured on film.

To say the least, Faith was very excited to be able to ride a bike sans training wheels! We still have to work a bit on the take off and landing, but the balancing part is down-pat! Great job Faith!

I Heart Google Reader!

My brother-in-law encouraged me about 2 months ago to give Google Reader a try. And, rather than learn something new, I decided I liked the "old-fashioned" way of checking blogs and various websites. I would go to my favorites list, and click one at a time to see if they've updated.

Well, after reading my friend Dawn's blog, and seeing her love for Google Reader, I thought I'd give it a try.

I LOVE IT!

Instead of checking several dozen websites everyday to see if there's anything new, all I have to do is click on my Google Reader page and ONLY the sites with updated material show up on my home page. I highly recommend it! It's my newest addiction (in addition to Facebook . . . come be my friend!).

Give it a try! You won't be sorry! It'll make your blogging experience much more efficient and enjoyable. Happy blogging!

Welcome Baby Lydia!

Congrats to Mike's brother and sister-in-law, Marc and Lori on the birth of their beautiful baby girl! She was born yesterday (April 10) and weighed in at 7 lbs 8 oz and was 21 in long!

My girls are SO VERY excited to have a "girl cousin"! We were able to visit her and her parents last night just after her Uncle Matt and Aunt Olivia were there. See Olivia's blog, LMNO, for more pics. Notice that she was wide awake for us, but she slept for Matt and Olivia . . . tee hee!

Grandma's Grace

Below is a copy of the email I received from my mom today . . . I hope it gives you as big of a grin as it gave me . . .

Hello, mother of my granddaughter :)

I thought I'd share the delightful scene that met my eyes when I went downstairs to turn off some lights yesterday afternoon. At first, I was stunned and then broke into raucous laughter! It would seem that my two eldest grandchildren have great imaginations and are able to pass playful moments in creative ways.




My grandson (who will remain unnamed to protect his identity) was later guilt ridden and burdened and was about to call Grandma to repent when Grandma showed up on his doorstep! (with Blake's little hat, bib, etc. left at Grandma's house earlier that day) He confessed as I sat by him while he was in the tub. All is well ... burden lifted.

However, I have yet to hear from granddaughter #1. She's probably forgotten and moved on to other adventures. I thought perhaps she would be willing to help Grandma pick up the imaginary delights and return the room to its former boring existence.

Grandma is not at all upset. The pillow was well worn with a large opening exposing the burgeoning stuffing, which was fairly screaming to be used in a more glorious way.

When speaking to her about it, I beseech you to use grace...she knows the word.

Looking forward to complete reconciliation....

Out of the Mouths of Babes . . .

Faith's comment did force me to stop and acknowledge the beauty of this morning . . . and then Bella's brought me back to reality.

I feel as though all of my abilities are being hampered due to the blahze' weather . . . parenting, wifely duties, house cleaning, laundry - even blogging.

SUN = HAPPY
GRAY, SNOW, RAIN, MUD = GOING LOONEY!

I've been washing the girls' bathing suits as often as their muddy snow things because they're getting punchy and want to "go swimming". Even yesterday when the sun was shining, Bella asked for me to set up her pool outside.

Dear God, please send the sun and the warmth! Like - long term . . . as in - snow being done. Pretty please with sugar on top?

OK, about two weeks ago, my sister tagged me on her blog, and I've been negligent in responding to it. But I have a few extra minutes today, and thought I'd oblige her.

I'm not going to tag anyone else - however - if you want to do your own post based on the following info, I'd love to read it. Here goes:

1. What were you doing 10 years ago?
Wow! That was a lifetime ago! 10 years ago was 1998. I was in my 3rd year of marriage and my 2nd year of teaching 4th grade at Vista Charter Academy. Mike and I lived in a cute little Cape Cod house in Alger Heights, and had McKenzie our black lab and BeeBe our gray cat. We took walks several times a week, but other than that, I have NO IDEA what we did with all of our spare time. I know we liked going up to the Silver Lake Dunes in the spring and summer with our sweet Bronco, but other than that - no clue. Man that was a long time ago!

2. 5 things on my "To Do List"
1. laundry, laundry and more laundry
2. figure out what we're going to eat for dinner tonight
3. book SOMETHING for spring break week so I don't go crazy
4. finalize a theme for our summer kids' program True Victory Sports Camp
5. book SOMETHING for spring break week so I don't go crazy

3. Snacks I enjoy:
Where to begin . . . snacking is my thing!
1. Starbucks Java Chip ice cream
2. vanilla ice cream with Magic Shell
3. graham crackers with frosting
4. chips and cheese with guacamole
5. hummus with sharp cheddar cheese and tortilla chips

4. If I were a billionaire, I would (in no particular order):
1. try to help causes such as Right to Life, Pregnancy Resource Center etc.
2. build homes across the world for needy orphans (like The House that GEMS built)
3. adopt a bunch of kids
4. start a ministry to assist parents in the spiritual development of their kid
5. pay off our house
6. do whatever I could to expand the Kingdom of God . . . pray for His leading as to where to spend it
7. find a way to make Chr. Ed more affordable for families
8. adopt a few more kids
9. help families struggling with infertility so they could afford treatment options
10. book 2 or 3 family vacations for each year - good ones!

5. 3 bad habits I have are:
1. I'm a picker . . . my face, my fingers . . . whatever
2. I hit the snooze button WAY too many times . . . really, what's the point? Why don't I just set my alarm later?
3. I procrastinate - but, for what it's worth, I work well under pressure

6. 5 places I've lived - make that 6:
1. Alto, MI - with my parents
2. GR, MI - at Calvin Dorms
3. GR, MI - in apartment with friends
4. Byron Center, MI - in a rental farm house
5. GR, MI - our first Alger Heights house
6. Alto, MI - the house we built, which is right next store to where I grew up.

As you can see, I've lived pretty much with-in a 20 mile radius my entire life . . . pathetic, but true! I'd like to add California, or The Keys or Mexico or Italy . . . maybe someday . . .

7. 5 jobs I've had:
1. planting, picking, butting, and packing celery at a local farm - for $2.85 per hour!
2. Russ' server - in the back side of Russ' mind you - NOT the front side. I delivered people their food after they called in their order on the sweet phones. Who needs face to face ordering? Just pick up the phone!
3. JC Penney - Men's Department. If you ever need to be fit for a dress shirt, or learn how to tie a tie - I'm your gal.
4. Vista Charter Academy - 4th Grade Teacher
5. Caledonia CRC - Director of Children's Ministries - still doing this and loving it!

It is hard to believe, but my baby girl is 3!

How time flies!

Everyone always tells you to "enjoy them while they're young - cuz before ya know it, there in college!" There's a saying "The days are long, but the years fly by." How true! How true!

Bella Grace has been a true blessing to our family. Her name means "beautiful, undeserved gift." She has lived up to her name. She is incredibly beautiful both inside and out. She is sweet, kind, compliant, loving, sensitive, and oh-so-snuggly. She loves to sing and dance, and she makes us smile and laugh everyday with her crazy facial expressions and hand-talking (gee, I wonder where she gets that from).

She's our precious gift from God! We give thanks and praise to Him for hearing our prayers for children and seeing fit to answer them with our beautiful girls! To God be the Glory!

We Be Jiggin'

So . . . I've done it! I've officially lived through my first 5K. Today, Mike and I, Megan, Mike and Kari and Chris and Ben (all pictured above) along with Mike's two brothers, Matt and Marc ran the 25th Spectrum Health Irish Jig 5K.

Mike ran a 21:28 and I ran a 28:41. Woo Hoo! That's a 9:15 mile for me people! I know most people wouldn't brag about such things . . . but that's a big deal to me!

My initial goal was just to finish . . . then I specified a bit more, and wanted to not be the last one through the finish line . . . but I really wanted to get through the race in under a half hour . . . MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!

Winter Blahs are turning into Spring Aaahhhs!

Ok ok ok! I know I've been a blogger slacker (aka a slogger . . . or blogker . . . ) My deepest apologies.

I think this winter just sucked the life and motivation right out of me! However, the last several days of sunshine and warmer temperatures have LITERALLY been a breath of fresh air for me It's been wonderful to spend some time outside running, walkiing the dog, and pulling out the bikes and scooters for the girls! I don't even mind the mud from all the melting snow!

It truly felt like spring would NEVER come . . . but there are little signs that it is around the corner: I've heard birds singing, seen geese flying overhead, seen the spring bulbs starting to peek through the dirt and I've even spotted some buds on the trees! Woo Hoo!

Mike and I are kicking off spring this weekend by running in The Irish Jig 5K. This is my first race, so I'm a little nervous. But I'm running with a good friend and running buddy and I'll have my hubby, my girls and my Mom cheering me on! Let's hope this lovely weather holds on for the weekend - (and the rest of March)!

Back in Mac!

I'm back people . . . I'm back!

My beautiful MacBook pro is as good as new (and I suppose it should be for $885!).

It's good to be back to the land of the living!

Grieving my Mac

It is a sad time in the life of Sonny . . .

My beloved Mac had a little accident. It fell from the counter-top to our tile floor. My computer bag was on the island in the kitchen, unbuckled, and while unattended fell over . . . and out slipped the MacBook Pro (tear tear sniff sniff)And, although the computer programming still works just fine, the CD/DVD disc drive/burner is the part it landed on and it is royally bent.

I took it in to the Mac store for the prognosis on my sweet Mac, and it was sad. Although not terminal . . . quite pricey. $885 to be exact. I even have the 3 year protection plan . . . which doesn't cover stupid human mistakes.

Don't you just HATE it when stuff like this happens? Stuff that was a COMPLETE accident, yet so easily could have been avoided? Now I am computerless - relying soley on outside sources to get my work done. It's a helpless feeling.

Here's to you MacBook Pro! May you be as good as new in 5-7 business days!

Yesterday our family grew by one. Mike thought he could quench my maternal instincts for another baby by getting a puppy! We'll see how long THAT lasts, but for now she's the family's baby (that is when the rest of us can manage to get her out of Faith's arms.

She's a Toy Fox Terrier, and is full of energy. But she's also EXTRAORDINARILY cuddley. She loves to chase her little rope bone, snuggle on someone's lap, burrow her head in your neck, or in your armpit . . . or . . .

Low Moment

Yesterday, I was in my closet dressed only in jeans and a bra. I was bending over to get a shirt from the bottom shelf of my closet when I hear a little voice say, "Mommy, your tummy looks like a sad face."

Yes, it was Bella, referring to the rolls forming a "sad face" line in my gut.

Nice.

Mmmm Mmmm Good!

This weekend, I had the privilege of experiencing two brand new recipes! Both EXTRAORDINARY! Saturday, Mike's Mom made us Lasagne soup, and Sunday, my mom made Nantucket Cranberry Pie! Delish!

LASAGNE SOUP
1lb italian sausage (browned)
2 c. chopped onion
2 c. chopped mushrooms
1 c. chopped carrots
2 T crushed garlic
4 T fresh basil
4 c. chicken broth
14 oz. can italian stewed tomatoes
10 oz. can tomato sauce
1 c. Mafalda or Capanella noodles
2 c. fresh spinach
mozzarella or provolone cheese

Brown sausage. Saute onion and mushrooms in sausage grease. In a large pot, combine all ingredients but spinach and cheese and simmer for 30 min. (Or put in crock pot on low for 8 hours or high for 4). Just before serving, add chopped spinach and sprinkle with cheese.

Maybe Shelly can use this for her next soup off! It's perfect for this gloomy winter weather we've been having!

NANTUCKET CRANBERRY PIE

In a buttered pie plate combine:
2 c. fresh or frozen cranberries
half c. sugar
half c. chopped walnuts

In a separate bowl combine:
1 c. flour
1 c. sugar
three quarters c. softened butter
2 eggs (beaten)
1 t. almond extract

Add the second mixture to the pie plate, but don't mix together! Bake at 350 for 40 min. or until done in middle.

If you like banket - you'll LOVE this! Top it with a little Cool Whip, and you'll be good to go.

If you want a really good meal! Make the soup and the pie . . . Mmmm Mmmm Good!

Tongue Twistin' Fun

Today was another looooong Monday. Every other Monday starts early and ends late. It starts at a little after 6:00a with the morning rush which includes packing lunches, gym shoes, snow pants, eating breakfast, getting dressed, brushing teeth, doing hair, packing the daycare bag, remembering to write the check for Grandma Sue (the daycare lady) AND (more importantly) remembering to put the check in the daycare bag - and this all by 7:30a (if all goes as it should). Then there's the full day of work for Mike and me, the full day of school for Faith and the full day of daycare for Bella, which generally means - "no nap"! I pick the girls up at 5:00p, rush home to get a quick dinner on the table and leave for church AGAIN by 6:00p for GEMS (a girl's club for 3rd-8th graders). I quick help lead singing and large group while Mike gets the girls ready and takes them to church cuz HE'S got to be there for a 7:00p meeting.

As you can see, the above is a recipe for DISASTER!

So tonight, when I got home from GEMS with the girls at around 8:00, I got them in their jammies and was getting ready to read them a few night-time books, when I got the idea to have Faith say, "She sells seashells by the sea shore." She gave it a go, and it was HILARIOUS, cuz she said it totally wrong, but was CONVINCED she was saying it right! She started giggling when she realized she said it wrong, and so the giggling fiasco began . . .

Next was "Unique New York" . . . REALLY! Try to say it three times really fast! It's hard! You get a little You-neek You-nork action or a little New Yeek New York . . . and the giggling continues.

What got me crying (because I was laughing so hard) was when I introduced "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers" and Faith said, "Peter Pecker picked a pail of pimpled peckers . . ." HA! Seriously! She said that! Obviously she didn't realize what she said, but I had tears running down my cheeks I was laughing so hard. When I asked Bella to say it, she gave it the old college try a couple of times, but finally said, "Peter Piper got some peppers". I don't think she understood why Faith and I were making it so difficult, and laughing so hard!

I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard! And I REALLY don't remember the last time I had so much fun with Faith.

As I tucked her in tonight, she was asking if I knew any more. I figured I'd do a little online search, but I'd love it if my fellow bloggers would share a few of their favorites!

Cool Post-Holiday Tradition

Prior to Christmas I heard of a neat post-holiday idea, and thought I'd share.

Each year my family receives 50+ Christmas cards and pictures of many of our friends, families and acquaintances. In the month of December, they are hung throughout my kitchen on the cabinets. When the season comes to an end, however, I start to get overwhelmed by the Christmas clutter, and have to take them down.

But this year, instead of putting them in a box somewhere, or tossing them, I've added them to the basket that sits in the center of the dining room table. Now each night, after our dinner devotions, I let one of the girls choose a picture and we pray for that family.



It's been a neat opportunity to think outside ourselves, and pray for those who have become a special part of our lives. We also get the chance to talk about how we know them, where they live (we may even pull out a globe and find the state or country), and some things that are special about them.
